Birthdays always cause me to ponder the passage of time. And pondering always leads me to my bookshelves to ponder the ponderings of others, for my own thoughts run out pretty quickly!
The moving finger writes and having writ
Moves on; nor all thy piety nor wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,
Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.
Omar Khayyam, THE GOLDEN TREASURY (1865)
Time is the longest distance between two places.
Tennessee Williams, THE GLASS MENAGERIE(1945)
Most of the methods for measuring time have, I believe, been the contrivance of monks and religious recluses, who, finding time hangs heavy on their hands, were at some pains to see how they got rid of it.
William Hazlitt, "On a sundial," (SKETCHES AND ESSAYS, 1839)
. . . God surveys all history at a glance --encompassing everything that is to us past, present and future. . . . the fact that we are confined to now and can visit neither yesterday nor tomorrow, doesn't mean that yesterday has ceased to exist or that tomorrow doesn't yet exist. It is, in fact, one of the inevitable conclusions of relativity theory that the WHOLE of space-time must have a real and continuing existence . . .
Edgar Andrews, WHO MADE GOD? SEARCHINGG FOR A THEORY OF EVERYTHING (2009)
What was it William Faulkner said in his Nobel Prize speech? "The past is not dead, it isn't even past." or something very similar.
It is always comforting to me to know that God has the past, present and future both in view and in hand. Having faith in the promises and the power of God has to do with trusting those promises in the present moment (the NOW) even when the present moment gives no evidence that the mighty acts of God in the past are still active and leading us into the future.
The economy, the culture, the upheaval in the church can all lead us to wondering about the future. We need to hear the voice of God, who sees and knows all time, as the divine one whispers in our ear, "Fear not, I got this, I really do."

Happy Birthday, Delmer. Your time has been well-spent. Most of it, anyway.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday! Happy God-day! Every birthday is a God-day. God gives us each and every day as a blessing. We just don't always see the blessing part when times are hard and feel empty.
ReplyDeleteMay God continue to bless you, and those of us who love you!
